Description
G3Throttle is a Control Strip Module to set the PowerPC750's Instruction Cache Throttling Control (ICTC) register.
This register controls the interval at which instructions are fetched into the instruction buffer in the instruction unit.
Increasing the interval reduces performance, which helps lower the PowerPC750's overall junction temperature and power consumption, thus increasing the duration of battery operation.
It can also resolve problems with peripheral hardware that are caused by the very high speed of the PowerPC750 processor, e.g. Visioneer PaperPort Strobe, Apple GeoPort Telecom Adapter, Avid Cinema, and PalmPilot.
Installation
To use this module, place it into the Control Strip Modules folder in the System Folder and restart.
Instructions
- To set the ICTC parameter , click on the module in the Control Strip and select a wait option from the popup menu.
The decrease in temperature, power consumption and performance is proportional to the selected wait value.
The current wait setting is displayed on the module.
- The "0 when on external power" option sets the wait value to zero (full speed) when connected to external power, to return to normal performance.
- The "Processor Cycling on" option turns Processor Cycling on - the screen on the module icon changes to blue when Processor Cycing is active.
- The "Cycle when on battery" option turns Processor Cycling on when operating on battery power, to reduce battery consumption.
